Owner’s engineering and strategic advisory

Integrated water, energy and environmental strategy

Define the right project. Choose the right solution. Create lasting value.

Suan Consulting helps asset owners and project teams make informed decisions about water, energy and environmental systems—from early strategy and optioneering through engineering, delivery and operation.

Independent advice that protects the owner’s interests—from the first investment decision to asset operation.

Independent advice informed by experience across owner, consultant and delivery roles.

The best project is not necessarily the lowest-cost design.

A project can appear economical at the point of procurement yet create decades of higher operating cost, resource dependency, underperformance or premature replacement.

Suan Consulting helps clients look beyond initial capital cost to assess the choices that shape an asset’s practical and financial value over its full life.

“Value engineering is not cost reduction. It is the disciplined pursuit of the best outcome for the investment.”

Where Suan can add value

Independent support at critical decision points

Suan can be engaged before investment, during project definition and delivery, or when an operating asset needs independent review, improvement or a new direction. The following areas represent connected decision points, not a fixed sequence.

ContextAlternativesBasis for actionDeliveryPerformance
  • Understand the context

Clarify the decision, ambition and operational need. Examine the asset, resource conditions, environmental and climatic context, stakeholders, constraints and opportunities.

  • Compare the alternatives

Develop and test credible technical, operational and commercial options, including conventional, nature-based and hybrid approaches where relevant, before a solution is selected.

  • Set the basis for action

Establish the statement of need, project brief, basis of design, investment case, delivery strategy and risk framework required for confident progress.

  • Protect value through delivery

Maintain the agreed intent through project definition, procurement, design coordination, construction, commissioning and acceptance.

  • Improve performance over time

Review operational performance, reliability, resource use, resilience and improvement opportunities as the asset, business and surrounding context evolve.

Suan may contribute to one decision, a defined project phase or a longer-term owner’s-engineering role across the asset lifecycle.

What we do

Independent support for complex decisions

Strategic project definition

Turn an ambition, operational issue or development opportunity into a clear, decision-ready project brief. Identify the information, studies and decisions needed before investment commitments are made.

Integrated resource strategy

Develop joined-up strategies for water, wastewater, utilities, energy demand and environmental resources—appropriate to the project’s location, scale, users and operational reality.

Optioneering and feasibility

Identify, assess and compare credible options using whole-life technical, commercial, environmental and operational criteria. Build a decision basis that clients can understand and defend.

Climate, environmental and resilience review

Assess climate risk, water availability, site conditions, environmental constraints, permitting pathways, dependencies and opportunities for resilient design.

Project definition and engineering support

Develop the basis of design, project brief, technical requirements, early engineering and procurement documentation needed to move confidently into delivery.

Delivery, commissioning and operational value

Support delivery teams and owners through vendor review, coordination, commissioning, performance assessment, training and operational improvement.

Why Suan

A long-term owner’s perspective

Suan Consulting brings together experience gained from the client, consultant and EPC sides of project delivery. This perspective helps reveal the practical consequences of early decisions: how a requirement will be interpreted by designers, procured by buyers, constructed on site and ultimately managed by operators.

Suan leads defined advisory and owner’s-engineering scopes directly, and works with carefully selected specialists where a broader multidisciplinary team is required.

  • Independent advice aligned with the owner’s long-term interests
  • Technical depth combined with commercial and operational awareness
  • Whole-life thinking: CAPEX, OPEX, TOTEX, resilience and adaptability
  • Environmental, social, cultural and local context considered from the outset
  • Conventional, nature-based and hybrid solutions assessed on their merits
  • Clear communication that brings decision-makers and delivery teams together

Relevant wherever water, energy, utilities and place shape asset value

  • Industrial facilities and process industries
  • Agrobusiness, irrigation and food production
  • Water, wastewater and resource-recovery infrastructure
  • Commercial, hospitality and mixed-use developments
  • District-scale utilities and urban infrastructure
  • Existing-asset upgrade, rehabilitation and optimisation
  • Energy, utility and infrastructure projects

Each engagement starts with the specific asset, location and decision—not a preselected technology.

Whole-life decisions

The lowest-cost plant may be the most expensive decision.

A lower-cost option can appear attractive at tender stage yet require more energy, chemicals, maintenance and intervention, become obsolete sooner, or expose the owner to greater operational risk. A more robust option may require greater initial investment but create better value across the life of the asset.

Suan helps clients make these trade-offs visible before they become locked into the project.
